Oral English for PhD students in the College of Science and Engineering

This in-sessional 2- credit programme is for research post-graduate students in the School of Science and Engineering and it focuses on developing every-day, non-academic, oral communicative skills to support acculturation and integration in Scotland. It runs in both Semester 1 and Semester 2.

This English class is for non-native speakers who can already communicate successfully in English, but are interested in moving beyond just being “understandable”.

Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, you should be able to:

  • communicate orally more fluently and with greater accuracy in a specified range of social situations of personal relevance
  • use a range of context-specific lexis to complete social interactions with more confidence
  • employ a range of interactional and interpersonal strategies achieve communicative aims
